Crate Game Engine. GPL

Crate Game Engine 20080323 is a game engine that is designed to make creating games trivial. The rendering and scripting engines are removed from the game engine to make the specialization of games as easy as possible. Currently, scripting support is implemented to allow a Lua script to be put directly in the game file, which can be validated as XML. Multiplayer text based adventure-style games can be played with the existing console rendering engine.

Games and simulations in Java. Freeware

Greenfoot 1.4.1 is an integrated development environment that makes it easy to write games and simulations in Java. It comes with a broad range of demo scenarios and documentation that gets newcomers started very quickly. Greenfoot may be used to learn or teach programming, or just to write a cool game and maybe put it up on a Web site. (it can export the game to a Web page). It was originally developed for school age learners, but is now used by all age groups.
